This 1975 Paris recital is really three concerts, since both pianist Oscar Peterson and guitarist Joe Pass offered a stunning solo entree before the duets that are le plat principal. When Peterson (b. 1925) and Pass (1929-1994) play unaccompanied, each man often sounds as if he has four hands; both share an orchestral vision of their respective instruments. When they join forces, as they do on the last six numbers here, it's like a match between two of the world's greatest table tennis players - who also happen to be engaged in stimulating conversation on a panoply of subjects, point after astonishing point (or in this case, counterpoint). On selections such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Just You, Just Me," Peterson and Pass richochet ideas - not just licks - off one another. One must have all the shots to play at this level. More important, one must know where to place these shots, or notes, as Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass do again and again and again.
