When A Sea of Faces was originally released in 1975 on Black Saint, it was met with skepticism by some critics who saw the album as conservative in comparison with some the Archie Shepp's mid-sixties recordings on Impulse! But the tenor saxophonist has always been a man of many faces and, staying true to the revolutionary spirit of jazz, he has never allowed himself to become locked into any one genre. One need only listen to the heavy and obsessive playing on "Hipnosis" or Bunny Foy's amazing vocals on "Song For Mozambique" to realize that this is Shepp at the height of his creative prowess. Charles Greenlee's trombone and Cameron Brown's bass playing are also essential ingredients to the brew. Tracks: "Hipnosis", "Song for Mozambique", "I Know 'Bout the Life" and "Lookin' for Someone to Love".
