LPCDreissues: Looking forward to the past

Although most of Michel Legrand's work has been in popular music and motion picture scores, jazz has been an inspiration and an undercurrent in his career from the beginning. A few of his dozens of recordings have been devoted solely to jazz. This 1982 date is one of the finest of that handful. Legrand brought together six of his favorite musicians and six of his songs, all but one of the compositions relatively little known. With Legrand at the piano, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, and Joe Wilder did some of their best playing of the decade, with superb backing by Ron Carter, Gene Bertoncini, and Grady Tate.
