Having chronicled the Mitchell Trio’s recordings for the Mercury label, which wound up with John Denver replacing Chad Mitchell, we HAD to reissue this rare 1967 album on Reprise, which shows Denver really moving to the fore as the group’s leader. In fact, this album presents the premiere recording of Denver’s "Leaving on a Jet Plane," a declaration of independence from the group’s former artistic direction if there ever was one. Still, there is plenty here to please the dyed-in-the-wool folk fan, too; includes, along with Denver’s "Like to Deal with the Ladies," Tom Paxton’s "Cindy’s Cryin’," "What This Country Really Needs Is Another Movie Star," "Coal Tattoo," "Adam’s Rib," "Alabama Mother," "She Loves You," "Flaming Youth," and "A God Is Dead/He Was a Friend of Mine."
