LPCDreissues: Looking forward to the past

Having recorded All Night Long (OJCCD-427-2) a week earlier, Kenny Burrell went into the studio on January 4, 1957 for a sequel album to be called, probably inevitably, All Day Long. Both have become classic examples of the blowing session, a jazz recording phenomenon that flowered with the advent of the long-playing record. The formula, which produced glories when it worked and boredom when it didn't, was simple: A handful of musicians plus a handful of tunes, which were usually written shortly before the session or invented on the spot out of familiar harmonic material like the blues and "I Got Rhythm."
