Although the Runaways were "all girl" they certainly weren't a "girl group" in Ronettes sense of the word, or in other words Joan Jett and Lita Ford were more likely to wear motor cycle jackets than prom dresses. And these women didn't just sing, they played jet-fuelled guitar and weren't afraid to turn the volume up. Although (like many pioneering bands) the Runaways never met with much commercial success during their years together (1975 - 1979), it isn't record sales that earned them their place in history, but their sheer determination to show the world that girls could rock just as hard as boys. And any aspiring girl rocker who has picked up a guitar in the decades since the Runaways first dropped their "cherry bomb", can't help but feel a little Joan Jett around the edges.
