Blues pianist John "Peter" Chatman, better known as Memphis Slim (1915-1988), is one of the genres defining artists. "At The Gate Of Horn" recorded live in 1959 at the popular nightclub, is one of his historic Vee Jay recordings of the period. It includes his 1948 number one R&B single "Messin' Around" as well as other hits from the early fifties: "Mother Earth", "Blue And Lonesome" and "The Come Back". However, it is the appearance of guitar legend Matt "Guitar" Murphy (who also appeared in the 1980 film Blues Brothers) that makes this recording unique. Slim generally shunned guitarists, but as Slim once put it: "Murphy was such a damn genius, man... I had to use him." In 1961 Slim also became part of the great flood of African Americans who, disgusted with ongoing racism, left their homes to seek out greater racial equality in Europe.
