Mulligan, along with Chet Baker, is considered one of the pillars of "white" jazz. Mulligan is refined, but never banal. Here Mulligan is accompanied by Hank Jones (one of the most accomplished pianists of the period), Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar player and maestro of swing) and bass player George Duvivier (who often played with Bud Powell and Lester Young). The music found on this recording includes some of the best-known compositions for the saxophone including "Line For Lyons", "Walkin' Shoes" and "Limelight Song For Johnny Hodges". The track "Apple Core" demonstrates sax writing for the big band at its best, while "Gerry Meets Hamp" and "Blues For Gerry" (besides being two reciprocal dedications) are a pretext for Unlea shing stabilizing jam sessions in which all the musicians involved have the possibility to put himself in the spotlight with excellent solos.
