Mississippi delta blues singer and guitarist Sam Chatmon (1897-1983) first gained popularity in the 1930s
with the Mississippi Sheiks, a band he formed with his brothers (he was also the half-brother of Charley
Patton). After dropping from public view for many years, Chatmon was "rediscovered" in 1960 in
Hollandale, Miss. by Paul Oliver and Chris Strachwitz. During this period he made recordings with John
Fahey and Nick Perls for Blue Goose Records and appeared at numerous folk festivals. He spent the rest
of his life in Hollandale, where the recordings collected on this album were made.
