Prima's distinctive sound encompassed New Orleans-style jazz, boogiewoogie,jump blues, R&B, early rock 'n roll, and even the occasionalItalian tarantella. Regardless of what form his music took, it swung hardand fast, with a rolling, up-tempo shuffle beat that helped some of hisearlier material cross over to R&B audiences (his songs were alsocovered by jump blues artists from time to time). His greatest period ofpopularity coincided with his marriage to singer Keely Smith, whosecoolly sophisticated vocals and detached stage manner made a perfectcounterpoint to Prima's boisterous presence: mugging, clowning, andcavorting around the stage with the boundless enthusiasm of a hyperactive boy.
