The next volume in the Lipsmackin’ series looks at the ultra pop yet decidedly quirky side of the glam tinged early 70’s as presided over with considerable success by Jonathan King.
His UK label rivalled Bell and Rak as the most successful indie label of the period, and a bedrock to that success were JK's own productions.
Often characterised by Bubblegum strings, playful and minimalist performances, off the wall production sounds, very poppy lyrics, with chord sequences and backing tracks often reused. Taken overall the JK sound becomes immediately identifiable, even though the musical styles covered vary hugely, from cod reggae to driving glam beat to singer songwriter.
BUBBLEPOP is the 'other ' view of the label's fantastic output.
As with the collectors world, many of these singles have found their way to creating impressions on today’s music makers. Bob Stanley of St Etienne is one and Lawrence of Felt fame is another, who in turn has contributed to the sleeve notes with his take on the tracks included.
