Recorded in 1980 and originally issued two years later as a private pressing, Homegrown captures the sound of a band refusing to follow contemporary trends. Instead of new wave or arena rock, Cal looked back to the heavier, more adventurous music of the late 1960s and early 1970s, combining hard rock, psychedelia, Hammond organ and analogue synthesizers into a remarkably assured debut. The performances have the confidence of a seasoned live band, reflecting years spent building a reputation on the New York club circuit.
Although only around two thousand copies were pressed—and many were reportedly discarded because of manufacturing defects—the album gradually became a prized collector's item. Strong melodies, powerful guitar work and imaginative arrangements make Homegrown much more than another private-press rarity; it is an accomplished rock album whose rediscovery has been richly deserved.
