Calypso marked a distinct turning point in the career of Harry Belafonte. Up until this point, calypso
was just one aspect of his, essentially folk-based music, but from this album on it became his primary
inspiration and soon sparked a revolution in music of the '50s and '60s. Many artists of this period,
in fact, have at least one calypso album in their repertoire, thanks to Belafonte's widespread
influence. Many songs from this album are written by Belafonte and Irving Burgie (aka Lord Burgess),
who is best known for "Day O" and "Jamaica Farewell". "Calypso" sold millions of copies and was at
the top of the Billboard charts for 31 weeks. Also includes 6 bonus tracks recorded in '55-'56.
