Camel is a British progressive rock band formed in Guildford, Surrey, in 1971. Known for their melodic, largely instrumental style, they blended elements of jazz, classical, and rock with intricate arrangements and smooth, atmospheric guitar work from Andrew Latimer, the band’s driving creative force. They earned a loyal following in the 1970s for their ambitious concept albums and their refined musicianship.

Released in February 1973, Camel is the band’s debut studio album. It introduced their early sound — a mix of melodic guitar lines, organ textures, and fluid rhythm sections — with tracks such as “Never Let Go” and “Mystic Queen.” While it didn’t chart strongly at first, it laid the groundwork for their later acclaimed albums like Mirage and The Snow Goose, showcasing the band’s skill at blending rock with instrumental and jazz influences.
