Charlie Byrd, the chief U.S. importer of bossa nova, was a guitarist of eloquence and considerable fame before he teamed with Stan Getz for the Jazz Samba album in 1962. This set, recorded at New York's Village Vanguard, captured Byrd in top form more than a year before he opened the bossa nova floodgates. Playing unamplified guitar, Byrd and his trio generated compelling energy and swing at decibel levels that soothed rather than assaulted the ear. In addition to superb performances of three standards, the guitarist offered a long set of variations on "Which Side Are You On?."
