The farthest left turn in a career full of 'em, 'Chopin '66' was something of an attempt by Reprise to sell classical music to a younger audience; the cover touted "the modern sounds of Jack Nitzsche and his Orchestra" doing "contemporary arrangements of Chopin themes," all of which certainly was true. But more importantly, this album allowed Nitzsche to flex his orchestral muscles beyond the constrictions of the pop world, muscles that within a year would achieve a brilliant synthesis of classical and rock on his arrangement of Neil Young's 'Expecting to Fly'.
