Creators of refined and original albums, Spirit are undoubtedly one of the most interesting groups in the panorama of American rock, thanks to drummer Ed Cassidy (ex-jazz drummer) and guitarist Randy California (friend of Jimi Hendrix, from whom he had obviously learned a great number of tricks). This album came to life between '91 and '95, but it is not a collection, it is a real album and of high quality. The guitar of Randy California flies free from the first track, "Shake My Ego," featuring a Hendrix-style intro, while "Compromise" is a track that is 100% Spirit. "Close To You," features Jazz-styled improvisations, while "Mean And Beautiful," is again in the style of a certain well-known lefty from Seattle. The passing of Randy California in January 1997 was a hard blow for all of us who have loved his extraordinary musicianship, but his music lives on and it is with great honor that we propose Cosmic Smile, definitely one of the best releases in recent Akarma history.
