This is Txarly Brown again keeping on the faith in a trouble-full project. Martian, robotical and Asimov-inspired Rumba. If you are handling this LP insert is because, somehow, you also have a ‘Disco Jondo’ copy, new album by Achilifunk Sound System after ‘Robot Caló’ (April 2015). In my devotion to keep on digging the musical possibilities within Catalan gipsy musical legacy (that mestizo rhythm misnamed as ‘Catalan Rumba’ that mixed spanish guitars and palmas with Afro-american, Brasilian and Antillean music). Today is the day to move forward (again) and, chiefly, to get rid of all corsettes. Fuck off Catalan Rumba, this is Disco Jondo! Disco Jondo is a borrowed label taken from mythical ‘El Turronero’, produced by Josep Llobell back in the 1980, which leds me to perfectly define the unlikely sum of disco music, funk music and the deep and terrible ‘cante hondo’ . Even when it’ ll never be.
Achilifunk Sound System is, still, Sam Mosketón (vox and guitarra ventilador), Jack Chakataga (he does whatever he wants to), the always great Lalo López (electric guitars) and me mixing it up. We’ve been added a bunch of freaks on vocals. At the bottom you’ve got a quick guide of this album ‘who is who’: all the features I assaulted to take part on this (all of them are a gem and all of them are happy with the result... win-win!). Besides the featurings, it must be said that the combo is expanding. We are moving forward. ‘Robot Caló’ included only one track on our side, “Bombéalo”, out of ten songs. This new album is 50-50! Of course ‘Disco Jondo’ includes some version of clàssic stuff we’ve revisited with our own achilifunk stylee, but we’ve also composed new songs (specially to feed our live show). Method is easy: me and Jack cook in private, Lalo sends his guitars and Sam shows up every time he is needed. By now the only one who knows about the final result of the experience is Voodoocuts, in charge of the mastering, and me... sorry but I couldn’t stand to give a listen to it.
We claim for a musical corner full of influences: this is what the first Achilifunk series album was about, and this is what the XXIst Century Gipsy Soul is about. This is where electrònica, disco funk and rock meet palmas, Spanish and electric guitars and (sometimes) the Catalan gipsies’ voices. And now, one question just to fuck up the orthodoxes of the genre: if one song includes guitarra ventilador, palmas and has been recorded by Catalan gipsies... is it Catalan Rumba or what the fuck is it? Sorry about this, but... all tracks of this album excepte for one include ventilador and palmas. The one that is left features the youngest gipsy woman ever on the voice. Pato vene tú aquí!!!
