As core jazz values stagger, splatter, or stagnate, the musicality, cohesiveness, and good feeling of the jazz scene of the 1950s invest it increasingly with the aura of a golden age. This 1956 album by some of the leading members of New York's floating jazz repertory company helps to make the case. The cast was headed by bassist Trigger Alpert, but in subsequent incarnations the LP was billed with the names of Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Tony Scott. So it remains in its first CD release. Urbie Green and Joe Wilder round out the horn section. The pianoless rhythm section is Alpert and drummer Ed Shaughnessy. Pianists are represented, however, in splendid arrangements by Marty Paich and Dick Hyman, with two by Scott.
