The combination of tenor saxophone and organ lends itself to a certain earthiness of expression that has typecast it as limited to the provision of background music for Saturday night carousing down at the corner bar. Tenor and organ are perfect for that purpose, no question about it. But, as Lockjaw Davis and Shirley Scott demonstrated in Davis’s group in the late 1950s, they can generate not only raucousness but tenderness and romance. The hard-driving and soulful blues performance here satisfy the one demand, a gorgeous treatment of “But Beautiful” the other.
