the most irresistible, inciting “bailables” from the most important latin music label of all times: fania. including selections released under the labels cotique, alegre y tico. a swinging combination of ultra-oscurities and well-known-winners, all in one single deluxe package presenting you a dance report from the guts and hearts of a submerged population group circa nyc 1966/70. full of pride and soul. hot shots & no fillers, all killers. the party stars now!!
this cd brilliantly demonstrates what happened when the restless youth of spanish harlem crashed into the 1960,s. the collision created colourful, controversial sparks. indeed, to this new breed of hispanic harlemites, the mambos and cha-chas of their parents generation were a drag. instead, they tuned into the psychedelic fashions, wild parties, hip culture and black r&b of their time. the result was intoxicating. for a brief period, from 1966 to 1969, a multitude of latin soul/boogaloo bands soaked raw hispanic rhythms neck-deep in afro-american rhythm & blues to groovy effect. it was a glorious moment that sadly stopped as soon as the '60's slid into the '70´s. this cd illustrates some of the latin soul era´s finest moments. culled from the fania family of labels -fania / tico / cotique / alegre - it evokes a time when everyone in new york city was doing the boogaloo.
