During the 1940s brothers Max and Sol Weiss operated a San Francisco plastic molding business that included a record pressing plant, one of whose early clients was pianist Dave Brubeck. Due to the local success of the Brubeck discs, the pressing plant metamorphosed into a label, which the Weisses named Fantasy after a science-fiction magazine. Besides such jazz musicians as Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Cal Tjader, and Vince Guaraldi, the Weisses signed all manner of performers, including comedian Lenny Bruce. Since 1968, when Fantasy was acquired by former sales manager Saul Zaentz and his partners, the label has had major successes with Creedence Clearwater Revival, r&b groups such as the Blackbyrds, and soundtrack recordings like Amadeus, but this collection focuses on Fantasy's remarkable jazz roster of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s.
