Although originally marketed to the 1972 Italian movie goingpublic as a political / soft porno trash flick, in an attempt to cashin at the box office, The Senator Likes Women is actually asophisticated political satire film that makes some very seriousaccusations about what is portrayed as the reigning Italianpolitical climate of the period, while hiding behind a kind ofabsurdist slapstick humour and surrealist dreamscapes(dominated by women’s buttocks and nuns). Lando Buzzanca(prominent Italian sex symbol of the era) brilliantly interpretsthe archetypal Italian male—torn between the sacred and theprofane, sex and celibacy, the devil and holy water—in the roleof Senator Puppis, a political pawn who is putty in the hands ofconniving and corrupt priests and cardinals who use theSenator—and soon President—to forward their bigoted andreactionary agenda. The only catch is that the usually chastePuppis can no longer ignore his sexual urges and his insatiablesexual appetite begins to seriously interfere with his politicalobligations and embarrass his mentor / puppeteer (a fantasticLionel Stander in the role of Cardinal Maravidi). Laura Antonelliis also amazing in the role of the temptress nun who threatensto lure Puppis away from politics altogether. She would soonbecome an Italian movie diva for her role in Malizia, released thefollowing year. Director Lucio Fulci (well-known outside of Italyfor horror films like The Beyond) is the mastermind behind thefilm’s brilliant ending which takes the film beyond satire andstraight into the grotesque!
