Don’t miss this (1973) cult thriller directed by the greatAntonio Margheriti (Anthony M. Dawson). Well-known inthe US for his special effects (he was Kubrick’s originalchoice for special effects director on 2001: A SpaceOdyssey, but Margheriti turned him down) and as a kindof Italian Ed Wood due to his primordial and innovativescience fiction films of the early sixties - featuring thebrilliant soundscapes of Angelo Lavagnino. Here Mr.Dawson brings us a gothic thriller set in a Scottish castleamong vampires, crazy noblemen, evil doctors, a cat, agorilla, the doomed descendents of the House ofMacGrieff, and featuring the most scandalous couple ofthe period, French chansonnierSerge Gainsbourg (in therole of the police chief) and a very young Jane Birkin (inthe role of the hysterical Corringa MacGrieff) - alreadyfamous for their legendary Je T’Aime Moi Non Plus(1969). An interesting note: The cat in the film’s title isnone other than Margheriti’s own cat Mushi.
