The first solo album of BREAD's lead singer, aptly named First (1973), meant a new direction for the Pop icon. After Bread's demise, David Gates wanted to venture into different directions. At the time of recording he was clearly just leaving the crossroads, as this album stylistically resembles his former band. At times this collection of 9 songs begins to show a hint of individuality that he would develop fully on subsequent solo albums.
Behind the singer is a strong group of musicians; accompanying him are Jim Horn, Jim Gordon, Larry Carlton, Russ Kunkel and Mike Botts, among others. The album opener "Sail Around The World" made it to a single.
