The music contained on this compact disc derives from two sessions recorded in New Orleans in 1946. The first session, by the Original Zenith Brass Band, recreates the music played at parades and picnics by marching bands that predate the innovations of King Oliver and Louis Armstrong; while the second date, by the Eclipse Alley Five, features an unusual trumpetless ensemble plus vocalists in a program emphasizing another early African-American music form, the Jubilee hymn. Both bands feature New Orleans immortals George Lewis, Jim Robinson, and Warren "Baby" Dodds, in performances conveying the raw energy that characterized the traditional jazz revival in the Forties.
