Recorded at the dawn of the 1970s, A Song For Tooley is one of those rare albums that quietly rewards listeners with every return. Rather than relying on virtuoso displays, Head Band built their music around strong ensemble playing, allowing guitars, keyboards and expressive vocals to interact naturally across a collection of songs that move between progressive rock, folk and blues. The result is an album whose understated confidence has helped it earn a loyal following among collectors of obscure British progressive music.
What makes the record especially appealing is its balance between intimate songwriting and adventurous arrangements. Acoustic passages blend effortlessly with electric textures, while the band continually explores subtle changes in mood without losing sight of memorable melodies. Although it remained largely overlooked upon its original release, A Song For Tooley has gradually been recognised as one of the more rewarding rediscoveries from Britain's early progressive rock underground.
