Still on a Beat kick, Howls, Raps And Roars is a 4 CD box set of recordings covering the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance between 1955 and '65. Among the keyworks of the Beat Generation it includes a complete recording of Alien Ginsberg??s Howl, works by Lawrence Ferglinghetti, Kenneth Rexroth (his Thou Shalt Not Kill), previously unreleased recordings by Gregory Corso and Peter Orlovsky, excerpts from the "Mad Mammoth Monster Poetry Readings" of 1959 and 1963, other poets including Lew Welch, Phillip Whalen, Kirby Doyle, Michael McClure and David Meltzer and selected excerpts from comedian Lenny Bruce. Compiled and annotated by Ann Charters (whose book The Penguin Book Of The Beats came out recently in the UK), it is the most comprehensive overview of a literary decade that was a lyric and attitude inspiration to the rock eras of both the late '60s and late 70s (and will most probably continue to be to any age in which bohemia flourishes).
