Most people associate the title tune with Sammy, but Steve Lawrence was the first to sing it, in a show ('Golden Rainbow') written for him and Eydie Gorme by Walter Marks. However, the combination of the song’s underdog theme—yes, Sammy was a mega-star but neither he nor his audience ever forgot his humble beginnings—and the brilliant arrangement by Bobby Darin collaborator Frank Wess ('Beyond the Sea; Mack the Knife') truly made the tune Sammy’s personal mantra. Other songs on this #24-charting record from 1968 include 'My Personal Property; I’m Glad There Is You; Here I’ll Stay; I’m a Brass Band; If My Friends Could See Me Now; I’ve Got You Under My Skin; Somebody; She Believes in Me', and Sweet November. One of Sammy’s best
