The Idle Race’s debut album is one of the most charming and imaginative records to come out of the late-1960s Birmingham scene. Built around Jeff Lynne’s gift for melody and the band’s playful studio imagination, The Birthday Party turns British psychedelic pop into something theatrical, colourful and slightly eccentric. Rather than leaning on heavy improvisation, the group favour compact songs full of unusual details, shifting moods and carefully arranged vocal harmonies.

What makes the album so appealing is its storybook quality. Songs such as The Skeleton And The Roundabout, I Like My Toys, Mrs. Ward and The Lady Who Said She Could Fly create a world of whimsy, melancholy and sharp pop craft, while the bonus material shows how much strong non-album work surrounded the group during the same period. This Retro Disc International edition expands the original album with fifteen bonus tracks, making it a generous portrait of one of Britain’s most underrated psychedelic pop bands.
