The Riverside subsidiary Jazzland may have been "an entirely arbitrary creation," as Riverside co-founder and producer Orrin Keepnews observes in his booklet notes, but the music in this sampler makes clear that Jazzland's legacy is well worth exploring. During its brief existence (1960-1964), the New York label helped launch the career of young trumpeter Chuck Mangione and recorded an array of top artists in diverse settings--the Montgomery Brothers with jazz star George Shearing as special guest; Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and their two-tenor working group; quintet sessions by Red Garland, Lee Morgan, and former Ellington soloist Paul Gonsalves; and much more. As an added bonus, Keepnews's notes offer an insider's look at the "Golden Age of Jazz" in which Jazzland and its gifted artists operated.
