The debut album by Spirit Of John Morgan sits in a fascinating space between British blues, psychedelia and early progressive rock. Led by keyboardist and vocalist John Morgan, the band had the feel of musicians raised on rhythm and blues but unwilling to remain within its usual boundaries. Hammond organ, piano, guitar and a forceful rhythm section give the record a dark, theatrical energy, while the arrangements move from driving blues-rock to more expansive and atmospheric passages.
Originally recorded in 1969, the album is at its strongest when the group lets its blues foundations stretch into something stranger and more dramatic. The playing is muscular without becoming heavy-handed, and Morgan's keyboards give the music a distinctive personality that sets it apart from many comparable British underground records of the period. This Eclipse Records edition adds the bonus track Along Came John, completing the album with a non-LP piece connected to the same creative period.
