Jolliver Arkansaw grew out of Bo Grumpus and arrived at a fascinating crossroads in late-1960s American rock. Home has the looseness of a band with folk and country instincts, but the arrangements are coloured by psychedelic studio touches, blues phrasing and flashes of harder guitar work. The result is an album that does not sit neatly in one style: it can feel rustic, soulful, acid-tinged and sharply electric from one track to the next.

The Felix Pappalardi connection gives the record an added historical interest, not only through his production and guest contributions, but also because the album sits close to the world that would soon produce Mountain. Leslie West’s lead guitar appearance on Gray Afternoon makes that connection even more explicit, but Home is more than a footnote. Its strength lies in the songwriting and the band’s easy movement between melodic psych-rock, earthy American grooves and strange little atmospheric detours.
