Josefus’ second album finds the Houston band pushing their raw heavy-psych sound into a tighter, more direct shape. Compared with the darker sprawl of Dead Man, this self-titled follow-up has a rougher bar-band immediacy: blues riffs, hard rock drive and garage energy all collide in short, forceful bursts, while the longer pieces keep the group’s underground psychedelic edge firmly intact.
The album works because it never feels polished into submission. The guitars remain sharp, the rhythm section keeps the music moving with a loose but powerful swing, and the vocals carry the restless attitude of a band working well outside the commercial mainstream. This Flawed Gems edition expands the original 1970 album with five bonus tracks, adding further live and archival material to complete the picture of one of Texas’ most uncompromising early heavy rock groups.
