Originally released by Impulse! Records in 1967, Kulu Sé Mama captures John Coltrane during the extraordinary final phase of his career, when the disciplined modal language of his classic quartet was opening into freer, more spiritual and increasingly collective forms of expression. It was the final Coltrane album to appear during his lifetime.
The title composition was written by vocalist and percussionist Juno Lewis, whose chanting, hand drums, bells and conch shell give the performance its ritualistic character. Coltrane’s regular group of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones is expanded by tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, multi-instrumentalist Donald Garrett and second drummer Frank Butler, creating a dense and hypnotic ensemble sound.
“Kulu Sé Mama (Juno Sé Mama)” develops through repeated vocal phrases, interlocking percussion and impassioned saxophone improvisation. Rather than following a conventional theme-and-solos structure, the music unfolds like an extended ceremonial performance, gradually increasing in force while retaining a deep sense of rhythmic unity.
“Welcome” offers a striking contrast. Performed by Coltrane’s classic quartet, it is a serene and lyrical ballad built around a gently ascending melody. Coltrane described the piece as expressing the peace that follows the achievement of awareness and understanding through struggle.
“Vigil” strips the music down to an intense dialogue between Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones. The absence of piano and bass leaves both musicians completely exposed, with Jones responding to every shift in Coltrane’s phrasing through rolling rhythms and explosive accents.
This edition concludes with the bonus track “Selflessness,” recorded during the same October 1965 session as the title piece. The expanded ensemble returns for another spacious exploration, combining the spiritual intensity of Coltrane and Sanders with layered percussion, bass clarinet and the powerful momentum of two drummers.
