This is the only album cut by the fantastic Village Callers, a hip Chicano combo with an equal talent for handling Soul, Latin, Sixties Rock and Funk! This set was recorded live at the Plush Bunny Club -the kind of place we wish we could have attended! It features a great range of excellent numbers, including the group's famous reading of "Hector", known by many for its great break on the intro, which the Beastie Boys sampled The album also includes a very good taste selection of covers, from Joao Donato's "The Frog" -done in a skipping Brasil '66 style- to a superb medley of Aretha Franklin's funkiest numbers -plus many other groovy cuts! ("Stoned Soul Picnic", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "I Don't need No Doctor" ...-that seem to work perfectly well for the Village Callers skills! The Village Callers were very popular band in East L.A. round 1968, more significantly, it is widely known that the Village Callers recorded a version of "Evil Ways" before Santana had done it. We have included 2 bonus tracks that have been out of print since 1968 ("Evil Ways" and "I´m Leaving"). This band and record constitute a classic in the story LA sixities Dance-scene. As stated in the original liner notes of the album: "Many groups have been described in many ways, but with the Village Callers, there are many ways to describe this one group; They're POP!, they are LATIN, They're JAZZ, They're RHYTHM & BLUES!, They're SUPER FUNKY SOUL!, they are anything you want them to be!... THEY'RE IN !".
