Despite a short career due to his early death in 1967 John Coltrane is considered one of the most important and controversial musicians in jazz of all time.
Over the years, Coltrane changed his style radically and recorded prolifically. Next to recording his own albums, record companies, taking advantage of his popularity, would give him top billing on sidemen projects.
'Live At Birdland' is undisputedly John Coltrane's most delicate all-round album with fantastic versions of "Afro-Blue" and "I Want To Talk About You".
And although the name suggests it is a live album, in fact only three of the five tracks were recorded at the legendary Jazz club in New York.
The other two studio recordings are at the same high standard that we're used to from Coltrane.
With Jimmy Garrison on the double bass, Elvin Jones on the drums, McCoy Tyner on piano and Rudy van Gelder as the sound engineer,
'Live At Birdland' is a classic that should not be overlooked!
