Manchester must be an incredibly inspiring place if you think of all the bands thatsprang from the Mancunian scene from the beginning of punk new wave (Joy Division,Buzzcocks) to the more recent exploits of Oasis, the Stone Roses and the HappyMondays. Almost all the above-mentioned bands had an unmistakable sense of wittyexistentialism and so it was for Mark E. Smith, whose social and philosophical take onthe world helped spread a kind of sarcastic nihilism that silently enraged a generationof quiet rebels. Their 1979 debut LP Live At The Witch Trials contributed to transformingmusic from a simple form of entertainment into a weapon of mass dissent. Co-written with Martin Bramah, whose acidguitar style matches perfectly a somehow Krautrock oriented Smith, this album features an incredibly modern soundapproach that still resounds in many current groups of the so-called post-rock scene. Songs like "Rebellious Jukebox"and "No Xmas For John Quays" sound as immortal and fresh today as they were 25 years ago, now featured on adouble album set with the second LP containing 10 bonus tracks from their early 7" and 10"s (see track listing).Track listing - Side A: 1.
