Live in Hannover, 11 April 1976 captures Can’s classic instrumental quartet during a particularly fluid and improvisational stage of the group’s development. Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Irmin Schmidt and Jaki Liebezeit reshape familiar compositions through extended grooves, spontaneous interaction and constantly shifting textures.
Recorded after the departure of vocalist Damo Suzuki, the performance shows Can moving decisively away from conventional song structures. Themes from earlier studio recordings provide starting points rather than fixed arrangements, allowing the musicians to dismantle, stretch and reconstruct the material in real time.
“Vitamin C” opens with Jaki Liebezeit’s unmistakably precise drumming and Holger Czukay’s repetitive bass line. Michael Karoli’s guitar moves between clipped rhythmic phrases, distorted accents and increasingly expansive improvisation, while Irmin Schmidt adds organ and electronic textures around the central groove.
The version of “Bel Air” transforms the atmospheric composition from Future Days into a more forceful live performance. The musicians gradually build layers of guitar, keyboards and rhythm without losing the spacious character of the original piece.
“One More Night” develops from a restrained, hypnotic pulse into an extended collective improvisation. The closing “Dizzy Dizzy” is the album’s longest performance, combining an insistent rhythm with fluid guitar work, electronic sound and abrupt changes in intensity.
Rather than reproducing Can’s studio recordings, these performances reveal how radically the group could reshape its material onstage. The Hannover recording documents the extraordinary rhythmic discipline, intuitive communication and fearless experimentation that made Can one of the most influential groups of the German underground.
