The Marble Index is Nico's second solo album and the recording on which she established the stark, uncompromising musical identity that would define the remainder of her career. Originally released by Elektra in 1968, it abandons the orchestrated folk-pop of Chelsea Girl in favour of harmonium drones, austere vocals and abstract arrangements created with John Cale.
All of the songs were written by Nico, whose deep, measured voice and frequently dissonant harmonium provide the foundation of the album. John Cale arranged the material around those elements, adding viola, piano, bells and unusual percussion to create music that draws upon European classical composition, medieval song, folk traditions and the avant-garde rather than conventional late-sixties rock.
The brief instrumental “Prelude” acts as an entrance into the album's isolated sound world before “Lawns of Dawns” combines drifting harmonium with shimmering and unsettling instrumental textures. “No One Is There” surrounds Nico's irregular vocal phrasing with rapidly moving viola, while the intimate “Ari's Song” was written for her young son.
“Facing the Wind” is one of the album's most turbulent pieces, built around pounding piano, scraping percussion and a deliberately unstable rhythm. The second side begins with the ritualistic “Julius Caesar (Memento Hodie),” followed by “Frozen Warnings,” whose harmonium, voice and suspended instrumental arrangement create one of Nico's most memorable performances.
The closing “Evening of Light” gradually develops from quiet, hypnotic repetition into a threatening combination of viola, harpsichord and percussion. Its apocalyptic atmosphere brings the album to an intense conclusion, reinforcing the sense that The Marble Index exists in a musical landscape entirely separate from the conventional singer-songwriter records of its era.
Produced by Frazier Mohawk and arranged by John Cale, the album initially found only a small audience but gradually became recognised as one of the most distinctive experimental recordings of the late 1960s. Its austere atmosphere and dramatic vocal style later proved particularly influential on gothic, post-punk, ambient and alternative musicians.
