Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950s seemed to act as a catalyst for so many things such as "King" Cotton, the Civil Rights movement, a polyglot of religious races and creeds, but perhaps, above all, for a stunning pot-pourri of music; from supercharged R&B to plaintive Hillbilly to Cotton Patch Blues, to the intense emotion of Gospel to the tough sounds of Rockabilly and RocknRoll.
It was all there and Sam Phillips was the first to realise that so much local talent needed an outlet and duly founded the Memphis Recording Service, the results of which have become history.
Many other local entrepreneurs attempted to have a taste of Sams success with varying results. Some foundered after only two or three releases, while a few, such as Meteor and Fernwood, would actually enter the Billboard Charts with sizeable hits.
This CD represents a documentation of one of those smaller, highly individual labels.
