Milestone Records was founded in New York in 1966 by producer Orrin Keepnews, who, because of his reputation as head of the stellar jazz indie Riverside from 1952 to '64, was able to assemble an impressive roster at his new label in relatively short order. McCoy Tyner, Gary Bartz, Lee Konitz, and Joe Henderson were early Milestone artists; Flora Purim and Ron Carter came on board after the label was acquired by Fantasy, Inc. in 1972; Sonny Rollins signed with Keepnews that year and has remained a Milestone artist ever since. Also featured in this sampler are several tracks from Galaxy, a Fantasy-affiliated label that sustained an ambitious jazz recording program from 1978 to '85. Among the artists who cut memorable sessions were Art Pepper, Nat Adderley, and Red Garland.
