New Jazz, an offshoot of Bob Weinstock's celebrated New York jazz indie Prestige Records, produced some 125 LPs from 1959 to 1964. Sessions were supervised by Prestige A&R director Esmond Edwards or Weinstock himself; artists were "people younger than some of the beboppers, who were going their own directions," says Edwards. Among the New Jazz artists included in this sampler are Eric Dolphy and Booker Little, who were pursuing noncommercial musical paths; r&b stars Jimmy Forrest and King Curtis, not known at the time for their jazz playing; Herbie Mann and Yusef Lateef, anticipating "world music"; Roy Haynes, Tommy Flanagan, and Ron Carter, up-and-coming jazz stars; the brilliant composer/arranger/saxophonists Benny Golson and Oliver Nelson; and Mal Waldron and Arthur Taylor, who were the linchpins of countless Prestige/New Jazz recordings during the 1950s and '60s.
