Kid Thomas Valentine (1896-1987) can be considered Bunk Johnson’s heir in the second wave of New Orleans revivalism that was triggered by the opening of Preservation Hall shortly after the present album was recorded. A classic lead trumpet, and a front man for various editions of the Algiers Stompers for over a half-century, Thomas’s frequent work at Preservation Hall and his numerous international tours would make his name synonymous with traditional jazz at its most authentic. The performances here, captured at the outset of his most successful period as a performer, are enhanced by a blue-ribbon front line and four of Thomas’s own original compositions.
