NY Eye and Ear Control puts trumpeter Don Cherry, trombonist Roswell Rudd, and alto saxophonist John Tchicai amidst the fiery trio of Albert Ayler, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray - who had only a matter of days before changing the course of musical history with Spiritual Unity . One of the defining documents of the new music of ESP-Disk’ - the sextet recorded this improvised work as a soundtrack to filmmaker Michael Snow’s 1964 film. What began as an informal meeting on July 17, 1964 resulted in a session that shook the foundations of music - a transcendent wall-of-sound group improvisation method that would echo through consciousness free-music and avant garde jazz for years to come. Undoubtedly this is among the most vital and forward thinking recordings in the history of modern improvised music. Also available on LP (GET 1013).
