"Opera Prima", despite its title, is not Pooh's debut, but their fourth LP released in 1971. It is indeed the first work on CBS, as a result of a contract prematurely terminated with the previous label, Vedette Records, for which the band was forced to pay penalties. Time didn't take much to prove the band had made the right move: "Opera Prima" contains one of the most famous Italian pop songs ever, "Pensiero", one of the singles coming out from the record, along with "Tanta voglia di lei".
All songs were written by Roby Facchinetti (music) and Valerio Negrini (lyrics), with the latter soon leaving the group and replaced by Stefano D'Orazio. The symphonic arrangements stand out in almost all tracks, giving it an epic tenor, even typical of a soundtrack, with the sole exception of "Il
primo e l'ultimo uomo", where the rhythm section has the upper hand, and flows in an energetic hard rock sound.
