Scott Joplin was born in Texarkana, TX in 1868, son of slaves whowere freed thanks to Pres. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of1863. An accomplished self taught pianist, Joplin started off writingpiano rags for more famous musicians to play but soon he beganperforming his own compositions, finding success with now classicssuch as "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer", famously includedin 1973's movie theater blast The Sting by George Roy Hill featuringPaul Newman and Robert Redford.
