Recorded at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on May 1st, 1970, Live In Santa Monica May 1970 captures Pink Floyd in the months just before Atom Heart Mother reshaped their studio identity. The performance belongs to one of the band’s most exploratory live periods, when familiar pieces could expand dramatically on stage and new material was still being tested in front of audiences.
The set moves through pastoral acoustic passages, slow-building psychedelic improvisations and some of the group’s most intense early space-rock material. Long versions of Atom Heart Mother, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, A Saucerful Of Secrets and Interstellar Overdrive show the band using live performance as a laboratory, stretching mood and structure far beyond the limits of the studio recordings. This Top Gear edition presents the complete Santa Monica concert across two discs.
