Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, United States Of Existence were among the earliest bands to deliberately revive the sounds and spirit of mid-to-late-'60s psychedelia. Formed in 1978 from the ashes of progressive outfit Klangfarb, the group immersed themselves in vintage instruments, analogue recording techniques, garage rock and obscure psychedelic records at a time when such influences were far from fashionable.
The band's goal was not simply to borrow psychedelic imagery but to recreate the atmosphere and production methods of the original era. Vintage organs, fuzz guitars, twelve-string textures, theremin and deliberately period-styled arrangements gave their recordings an authenticity that helped establish them as pioneers of the emerging neo-psychedelic movement.
Return To The Psychedelic is their defining anthem, a gloriously energetic celebration of the '60s psych sound which first reached a wider audience through Greg Shaw's legendary Battle Of The Garages compilation in 1981. Its ringing guitars, swirling keyboards and exuberant vocals made it an instant underground classic.
On the flip, Shadows Of Rainbows offers another superb slice of vintage-styled psychedelia. Originally appearing on the cult The Rebel Kind compilation in 1983, it combines melodic garage-pop instincts with colourful psychedelic arrangements and the band's unmistakably authentic analogue feel.
Together for the first time on one 45, these two tracks capture United States Of Existence at the forefront of the early-'80s psychedelic revival – years before neo-psych became a recognised movement.
