After a decade when the Everly Brothers were trying to catch up or at least keep up with the changes in the music industry, the music industry finally caught up with them in 1968, as country rock was the new rage and the Everly Brothers were the old masters of the form. Thus, the time was right for an explicitly country rock album, and so Warner head Lenny Waronker brought in Beau Brummel leader Ron Elliott to work with Don and Phil. The result was an album that in some circles is regarded as a masterpiece, a subdued, reflective blend of traditional and current country as well as songs by the new crop of singer-songwriters (e.g. Randy Newman) that, ironically, was probably AHEAD of its time. Includes "The Everly Family (1952)," "Mama Tried," "Less of Me," "T for Texas," "I Wonder If I Care as Much," "Ventura Boulevard," "Shady Grove," "Illinois," "Living Too Close to the Ground," "You Done Me Wrong," "Turn Around," "Sing Me Back Home," and "Montage: The Everly Family/Shady Grove/Kentucky."
